Course Overview: Global Studies and Research Writing is a course that allows students to study the landscape of contemporary global problems and issues along with some in depth explorations of specific topics. The overall aim of this course is to introduce students to the events, trends, and problems facing citizens and leaders in an increasingly interdependent world. It is important for us to have an understanding of the challenges facing our world today; it allows us a glimpse into the future, into the world we will inhabit in the coming decades. Educating a base (that’s you) is one step we can take to begin solving the problems that could endanger our world and society in the future. This course will act as that first building block in creating a base of educated young citizens that will be the next generation of leaders who must deal with 21st century global issues.
Course of Study: The course of our studies in 21st Century Global Studies will be student generated. Inside a particular framework, students will decide what they want to study, and how they want to learn the material, therefore there is no beginning or end of curricular content. There is, however, a list of topics that could be studied in this course. We will create this list as a class during the first week. Within each item lies many issues vital to the security and well being of the world and its peoples. Students in this course will be able to choose which of the topics and interconnected issues they want to study. While much of the coursework in Global Issues is decided upon by the students, there are some issues and topics that we will study together as a class.
